Christmas and New Year in a Barbados villa: what to book and when
3 November 2026 · One Caribbean Estates Rental Team
Every year, usually in late October, the same message reaches our office in Holetown: is there anything left for Christmas? Sometimes there is. More often, the villas families had in mind were taken months earlier, many of them by guests who rebooked for next year on the morning they left.
Christmas and New Year are the busiest fortnight of the Barbados year. The weather is settled, the island is at its liveliest, and families from the UK, North America and Europe come back to the same West Coast villas, often with three generations under one roof. If you are hoping to join them, this is how the festive season works, and how to give yourself the best choice.
Why the festive weeks book so early
The West Coast has a limited number of large, staffed villas, and the festive weeks are the ones everyone wants. Many owners keep Christmas for themselves or offer it first to guests who have stayed before. What remains is often reserved a year ahead, and the beachfront villas go first. Some guests book next Christmas before they leave at the end of this one.
If you are planning for this December, ask early and be flexible: a villa a short walk from the beach, or in the hills of Royal Westmoreland or Sugar Hill, may still be free when the beachfront has gone. If you are planning for next year, the best time to ask is while this season is still under way.
Minimum stays and festive dates
Most villas set a minimum stay over Christmas and New Year, and many prefer the festive period to be booked as a block, so arrivals and departures fall on set dates. Outside the festive weeks, minimum stays are usually shorter and arrival days more flexible.
When you enquire, give us your ideal dates and how much you can move them. A day either side can make the difference between one villa and another.
What festive rates include
Festive weeks are priced above the rest of the winter season. What the rate covers varies by villa, so read it carefully and ask us to explain anything unclear. In our experience, the questions worth asking are:
- which staff are included, and on which days they work
- whether the villa has a private chef, and how you would like to celebrate Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve
- how food and drink for the house are bought, and how that is settled at the end of the stay
- what taxes and service charges apply
- the deposit, the payment schedule and the cancellation terms
No villa includes a festive dinner in its rate. Where a villa has a private chef, the chef plans and prepares your meals, and the cost of the shopping is covered by you as guests. If your villa has no private chef and you would like to celebrate at home, we can arrange one for you. Or, if you would rather go out, we can book your Christmas or New Year’s Eve dinner at one of the island’s best restaurants.
Staffed villas for families
A staffed villa is what makes a Barbados Christmas so easy. Depending on the house, the team might include a private chef, a butler, housekeepers and a gardener, and they know the villa and its guests well. A good private chef will plan menus with you before you arrive, take care of children’s meals and dietary needs, and prepare the Christmas lunch your family is used to, or a Bajan one if you would like to try it.
For families, we usually suggest looking at the sleeping arrangements first: how many bedrooms are en suite, which rooms suit children, whether there is a separate cottage for grandparents or older teenagers. Then the outside space: a calm beach, a pool that can be seen from the terrace, shade in the afternoon.
Planning the rest of the holiday
Once the villa is booked, our concierge team takes care of the rest, and over the festive weeks it pays to book early. We can arrange almost anything you would like: restaurant tables on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, a private chef for a celebration at the villa, a boat for a day’s snorkelling, golf tee times, spa treatments, car hire and airport transfers. Tell us what would make the holiday for your family, and we will organise it with the villa team before you arrive.
Villas still available
The villas we represent and book directly with our team are in the Book direct collection. For a wider choice, see all holiday villas, our staffed villas and beachfront villas to rent. If you tell us your dates, group and budget, we will come back with what is genuinely available, rather than a list of villas that are already taken.
Questions and answers
How far ahead should I book a villa for Christmas in Barbados?
As early as you can. Many festive weeks are reserved a year ahead, often by returning guests, some of whom book next year before they leave.
Is there a minimum stay over Christmas and New Year?
Usually, yes, and it is longer than at other times of year. The exact length depends on the villa.
Are staff included in the villa rate?
In most staffed villas the core team is included. Food, drink, extra services and gratuities are usually separate. Check what each villa’s rate covers.
Can we still find a villa in November for this Christmas?
Sometimes. Flexible dates, and a villa near rather than on the beach, give you the best chance.
